Works I Didn't Complete Reading Are Piling Up by My Nightstand. What If That's a Good Thing?

This is a bit awkward to admit, but here goes. Several books sit by my bed, each incompletely read. Inside my smartphone, I'm midway through 36 listening titles, which seems small alongside the 46 ebooks I've abandoned on my digital device. The situation does not include the increasing pile of pre-release copies beside my living room table, competing for praises, now that I work as a professional author in my own right.

From Determined Completion to Deliberate Setting Aside

At first glance, these numbers might look to corroborate recent comments about current concentration. One novelist noted not long back how easy it is to distract a individual's focus when it is divided by social media and the constant updates. The author suggested: “Maybe as people's focus periods shift the literature will have to adapt with them.” But as an individual who used to persistently get through whatever novel I picked up, I now view it a personal freedom to stop reading a novel that I'm not in the mood for.

Life's Finite Span and the Glut of Options

I wouldn't believe that this practice is a result of a brief attention span – rather more it relates to the awareness of time slipping through my fingers. I've consistently been impressed by the spiritual maxim: “Keep mortality each day in view.” Another reminder that we each have a just limited time on this Earth was as horrifying to me as to everyone. However at what other point in human history have we ever had such immediate access to so many incredible masterpieces, anytime we want? A glut of treasures greets me in any library and on any digital platform, and I aim to be deliberate about where I direct my attention. Could “DNF-ing” a story (abbreviation in the literary community for Incomplete) be not just a mark of a weak focus, but a selective one?

Selecting for Understanding and Insight

Especially at a period when book production (and thus, commissioning) is still led by a certain group and its concerns. While engaging with about characters different from ourselves can help to develop the muscle for understanding, we additionally choose books to reflect on our personal experiences and place in the society. Before the works on the displays more fully reflect the backgrounds, realities and concerns of prospective individuals, it might be quite hard to keep their interest.

Modern Authorship and Reader Interest

Certainly, some novelists are effectively crafting for the “modern focus”: the tweet-length style of some current works, the tight fragments of others, and the quick chapters of several contemporary stories are all a wonderful example for a shorter style and style. Additionally there is no shortage of author advice designed for securing a audience: refine that initial phrase, improve that beginning section, raise the tension (further! more!) and, if writing mystery, introduce a victim on the first page. This advice is all solid – a prospective representative, editor or audience will spend only a few precious moments choosing whether or not to continue. There is little reason in being difficult, like the person on a writing course I joined who, when confronted about the storyline of their novel, stated that “it all becomes clear about three-fourths of the through the book”. No novelist should put their follower through a series of difficult tasks in order to be understood.

Crafting to Be Understood and Allowing Space

But I absolutely create to be comprehended, as to the extent as that is possible. At times that requires leading the reader's hand, guiding them through the story point by succinct point. Sometimes, I've discovered, understanding requires perseverance – and I must give myself (along with other writers) the permission of wandering, of layering, of straying, until I discover something meaningful. A particular writer argues for the story finding fresh structures and that, instead of the conventional dramatic arc, “different patterns might enable us imagine new ways to create our narratives alive and authentic, keep making our works original”.

Evolution of the Novel and Current Platforms

From that perspective, each perspectives agree – the fiction may have to adapt to suit the today's consumer, as it has constantly done since it originated in the historical period (as we know it now). Perhaps, like previous writers, tomorrow's authors will return to publishing incrementally their works in newspapers. The future such authors may already be publishing their content, section by section, on online platforms including those visited by many of regular users. Art forms change with the times and we should let them.

Beyond Limited Concentration

But do not claim that every changes are entirely because of reduced concentration. If that was so, concise narrative compilations and very short stories would be regarded far more {commercial|profitable|marketable
