We are verifying images and video posted this morning that show the scene of a reported car bomb blast that authorities in Russia say killed a senior military officer in Moscow. Russian authorities stated that Lieutenant General Fanil Sarvarov was in the car that detonated and that he succumbed to his injuries. A probe is currently ongoing. Our starting point to verify the site of where the images were from relied on social media reports saying the explosion happened on Yasenevaya Ulitsa in the southern district of the capital city of Russia. We used street-view imagery on Google Maps and the local mapping service Yandex to match the unique yellow hue of a nearby apartment building captured in the video. Identifying additional buildings, lamp-posts and the street layout verified the exact location the footage were captured. We also checked that the videos were recent and that the visuals had not undergone manipulated.
