🔗 Share this article Anthony Barry Shares The Philosophy: The England Jersey Should Feel Like a Cape, Not Body Armour. A decade ago, the England assistant coach competed at a lower division club. Currently, he is focused on helping the England manager claim the World Cup trophy in 2026. His journey from athlete to trainer commenced through volunteering coaching youngsters. Barry reflects, “Nights, a small field, tasked with 11 vs 11 … poor equipment, limited resources,” and he fell in love with it. He discovered his purpose. Metoric Climb The coach's journey is incredible. Commencing as Paul Cook’s assistant, he developed a name with creative training and great man-management. His club career included elite sides, while also serving in coaching jobs abroad for Ireland, Belgium, and Portugal. He has worked with stars like top footballers. Now, with England, it’s full-time, the top as he describes it. “Dreams are the starting point … Yet I'm convinced that passion overcomes challenges. You dream big but then you bring it down: ‘What's the process, gradually?’ Our goal is the World Cup. However, vision doesn't suffice. It's essential to develop a methodical process enabling us to have the best chance.” Detail-Oriented Approach Obsession, especially with the smallest details, defines Barry’s story. Toiling around the clock under the sun—sometimes the moon, too, he and Tuchel test boundaries. Their methods feature psychological profiling, a strategy for high temperatures for the finals abroad, and creating a unified squad. The coach highlights “Team England” and avoids language including "pause". “This isn't a vacation or a rest,” Barry notes. “It was vital to establish a setup that attracts the squad and they're pushed that it’s a breather.” Ambitious Trainers He characterizes himself along with the manager as highly ambitious. “Our goal is to master all parts of the match,” he states. “We seek to command the whole ground and that's our focus many of our days on. We must to not only anticipate with developments but to surpass them and set new standards. It's an ongoing effort focused on finding solutions. And to clarify complicated matters. “We get 50 days alongside the squad ahead of the tournament. We have to play a sophisticated style for a tactical edge and we have to make it so clear during that time. It's about moving it from concept to details to know-how to performance. “To build a methodology that allows us to be productive in the 50 days, we have to use the whole 500 we’ll have had since we took the job. During periods without the team, we have to build relationships with them. We must dedicate moments communicating regularly, observing them live, sense their presence. If we just use the 50 days, we have no chance.” World Cup Qualifiers He is getting ready for the final pair in the qualifying campaign – against Serbia at Wembley and Albania in Tirana. England have guaranteed qualification after six consecutive victories with perfect defensive records. Yet, no let-up is planned; on the contrary. Now is the moment to strengthen the squad's character, for further momentum. “We are both certain that the football philosophy should represent everything that is good of English football,” Barry explains. “The fitness, the versatility, the robustness, the integrity. The national team shirt should be harder than ever to get yet easy to carry. It must resemble a cloak instead of heavy armour. “For it to feel easy, we have to give them an approach that enables them to operate as they do in club games, that resonates with them and lets them release restrictions. They need to reduce hesitation and more in doing. “You can gain psychological edges available to trainers at both ends of the pitch – building from the defense, closing down early. Yet, in the central zone of the pitch, those 24 metres, it seems football is static, notably in domestic leagues. All teams are well-prepared currently. They understand tactics – structured defenses. We are focusing to focus on accelerating the game in that central area.” Drive for Growth Barry’s hunger for development is relentless. While training for the top coaching badge, he was worried regarding the final talk, as his cohort contained luminaries like Lampard and Carrick. To enhance his abilities, he sought out tough situations imaginable to hone his presentations. Such as Walton jail locally, and he trained detainees for a training session. He completed the course with top honors, and his dissertation – focusing on set-pieces, where he studied thousands of throw-ins – became a published work. Lampard was among those won over and he hired Barry on to his staff with the Blues. When Frank was fired, it said plenty that the club got rid of most of his staff while keeping Barry. The next manager at Chelsea was Tuchel, and, four months later, they claimed the Champions League. After Tuchel's exit, Barry remained with Potter. Once Tuchel resurfaced in Germany, he recruited Barry of Chelsea to rejoin him. English football's governing body see them as a double act akin to Gareth Southgate and Steve Holland. “I’ve never seen anything like Thomas {in terms of personality and methodology|in character and approach|
